As  someone who has been re-elected to Dublin City Council in 1999, 2004 and  2009 I believe that I work hard for and with the community\u00a0 I  represent. I have no problem with Councillors being challenged and  fairly criticised \u2013 we get things wrong. However we also get an awful  lot of things right.<\/p>\n<p>In  assessing our income and expenditure some understanding should also be  applied to the relative populations we have to service.\u00a0 It should also  take into account that some Councillors take on additional  responsibilities that may involve travel or time off work etc.<\/p>\n<p>In  my own case there is a population of over 100,000 in my electoral area  as compared to electorates of several hundred in other parts of the  country. As a Dublin City Councillor some of the costs that I meet out  of pocket include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Printing costs,<\/li>\n<li>Distribution cost,<\/li>\n<li>Home Office and Phone,<\/li>\n<li>Donations  to Local Organizations \u2013 there are, for example at least ten Community  Festival\u00a0 Committee in my area \u2013 not to mention Summer Projects, Senior  Citizens Parties etc.<\/li>\n<li>Postage \u2013 unlike Oireachtas members Councillors do not get free post.<\/li>\n<li>Stationary\/office equipment,<\/li>\n<li>Advertising and sponsorship,<\/li>\n<li>Travel within my own electoral area \u2013 Given that my entire electoral area has Disc Parking this can add up.<\/li>\n<li>Website maintenance and associated costs<\/li>\n<li>Election costs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In most of the above, these costs would be borne by the State if I was an Oireachtas member.<\/p>\n<p>Apart  from serving as a Councillor I hope that I also play an active and  constructive role in both my own community and Dublin generally. At the  last count this amounted to over twenty two \u00a0bodies in which I am active  in a totally unpaid capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Yes  we need Local Government reform and yes I want to play a part in that. I was co-opted to Dublin City Council in 1993 to fill the vacancy caused by the appointment of Ruairi Quinn as Minister for Enterprise and Employment. Since then I have been re-elected at each local elections in 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019 in varying parts of Dublin Bay South as the electoral areas changed. On the Council I have served as Chairperson of the Employment Committee, Finance Committee, Arts and Sports Committee, Housing Committee, Protocol Committee and the Council itself as Lord Mayor of Dublin. I have also served as Chairperson of the South East Area Committee. I was elected Leader of the Labour Group in 2011. I have served as Cathaoirleach of the Dublin Regional Authority, the Southern and Eastern Regional Assembly and the Eastern and Midlands Regional Assembly. The only person to chair all three. I pioneered the 20% Social and Affordable Housing concept though the Dublin Docklands Development MasterPlan and have established a housing co-op in my own area and am a Board member of an Approved Housing Body. I was for ten years Chairperson of the South Dublin\\\/Wicklow Branch of the Irish Foster Care Association. Clubs and Committees Currently on Dublin City Council I Chair the South East Area Committee and the Housing Strategic Policy Committee. I am Board member of Donnybrook Community Employment and Sandymount Community Services, Donnybrook Community Playschool and numerous other local, community and Dublin wide organisations. I am member of the Board of Scouting Ireland, the City of Dublin Education and Training Board and the Royal Hospital Donnybrook Board.
