{"id":53,"date":"2005-01-30T19:33:36","date_gmt":"2005-01-30T18:33:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dermotlacey.ie\/blog\/2005\/01\/sinn-fein-shallow-in-their-commitment-to-dublin\/"},"modified":"2008-07-11T14:11:07","modified_gmt":"2008-07-11T13:11:07","slug":"sinn-fein-shallow-in-their-commitment-to-dublin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dermotlacey.ie\/blog\/2005\/01\/sinn-fein-shallow-in-their-commitment-to-dublin\/","title":{"rendered":"Sinn F\u00e9in &#8211; Shallow in their Commitment to Dublin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>STATEMENT BY Cllr DERMOT LACEY<br \/>\nLabour Party Councillor on Dublin City Council<\/p>\n<p>SINN F\u00c9IN &#8211; Shallow in their commitment to Democracy and shallow in their policies for Dublin.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking in advance of the Dublin City Council meeting to adopt a new City Development Plan for 2005-2011, former Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Dermot Lacey said that while recent events had shown Sinn Fein to be shallow in terms of their commitment to Democratic norms<br \/>\nnow we see that they are as shallow in their policies for the future of Dublin&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n&#8220;Despite all their talk, despite the hype and despite their numbers on the City Council increasing from four to ten it would appear that Sinn Fein members on Dublin City Council continue to have little to say, and have little input into the future of Dublin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Of the 117 amendments submitted by Councillors to the Draft Development Plan only five have been submitted by Sinn Fein -the Party we are constantly being told are &#8220;active on the ground&#8221; and the only Party &#8220;in touch with the electorate&#8221;. In contrast Labour Party Councillors submitted sixty-nine of the proposed amendments.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the time of the last Local Elections, I publicized the fact that Sinn Fein had not put forward even one single amendment to the Draft Development Plan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now six months after those elections Sinn Fein still have little to say on the future of Dublin. My background Growing up in Donnybrook, where I still live, I was always in involved in community life particularly through my membership of Donnybrook Scout Group. I was co-opted to Dublin City Council in 1993 to fill the vacancy caused by the appointment of Ruairi Quinn as Minister for Enterprise and Employment. Since then I have been re-elected at each local elections in 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019 in varying parts of Dublin Bay South as the electoral areas changed. On the Council I have served as Chairperson of the Employment Committee, Finance Committee, Arts and Sports Committee, Housing Committee, Protocol Committee and the Council itself as Lord Mayor of Dublin. I have also served as Chairperson of the South East Area Committee. I was elected Leader of the Labour Group in 2011. I have served as Cathaoirleach of the Dublin Regional Authority, the Southern and Eastern Regional Assembly and the Eastern and Midlands Regional Assembly. The only person to chair all three. I pioneered the 20% Social and Affordable Housing concept though the Dublin Docklands Development MasterPlan and have established a housing co-op in my own area and am a Board member of an Approved Housing Body. I was for ten years Chairperson of the South Dublin\\\/Wicklow Branch of the Irish Foster Care Association. Clubs and Committees Currently on Dublin City Council I Chair the South East Area Committee and the Housing Strategic Policy Committee. I am Board member of Donnybrook Community Employment and Sandymount Community Services, Donnybrook Community Playschool and numerous other local, community and Dublin wide organisations. I am member of the Board of Scouting Ireland, the City of Dublin Education and Training Board and the Royal Hospital Donnybrook Board.
