{"id":376,"date":"2009-07-07T16:15:28","date_gmt":"2009-07-07T16:15:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dermotlacey.ie\/blog\/?p=376"},"modified":"2009-07-07T16:15:28","modified_gmt":"2009-07-07T16:15:28","slug":"press-release-rezoning-of-rte-lands-not-a-foregone-conclusion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dermotlacey.ie\/blog\/2009\/07\/press-release-rezoning-of-rte-lands-not-a-foregone-conclusion\/","title":{"rendered":"Press Release: Rezoning of RT\u00c9 Lands not a Foregone Conclusion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cReports that the RTE lands at Donnybrook are to be rezoned should not be taken as conclusive\u201d according to former Lord Mayor of Dublin and local City Councillor Dermot Lacey.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the text of RTE\u2019s submission to the Draft City Development Plan has been released following a formal request submitted by me that is all it is \u2013 a submission.<\/p>\n<p>By and large the local community has accepted RTE\u2019s expansion beyond the initial Montrose complex and despite the lack of any real neighbourly relationship the community has not in any way impeded RTE\u2019s use of the site.<\/p>\n<p>However the attempt to change the Zoning from Z15 Institutional and Community use to Z10 that would allow \u201cfor mixed use development on which office, retail and residential would be the predominant use\u201d would be a major challenge to the interests of the local area and will have to be examined in huge detail before any such rezoning could be contemplated.<\/p>\n<p>The current RTE complex covers the original Montrose House estate (once home to the Jameson Family and at one stage lived in by Marconi the reputed inventor of radio), the former Sports Grounds of St. Andrews College in whose outdoor Swimming pool I swam as a child and parts of the Belville and other lands.<\/p>\n<p>Given the importance of the new City Development Plan for the future wellbeing of Dublin it is heartening to see the National Broadcaster take such an interest in this. I was co-opted to Dublin City Council in 1993 to fill the vacancy caused by the appointment of Ruairi Quinn as Minister for Enterprise and Employment. Since then I have been re-elected at each local elections in 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019 in varying parts of Dublin Bay South as the electoral areas changed. On the Council I have served as Chairperson of the Employment Committee, Finance Committee, Arts and Sports Committee, Housing Committee, Protocol Committee and the Council itself as Lord Mayor of Dublin. I have also served as Chairperson of the South East Area Committee. I was elected Leader of the Labour Group in 2011. I have served as Cathaoirleach of the Dublin Regional Authority, the Southern and Eastern Regional Assembly and the Eastern and Midlands Regional Assembly. The only person to chair all three. I pioneered the 20% Social and Affordable Housing concept though the Dublin Docklands Development MasterPlan and have established a housing co-op in my own area and am a Board member of an Approved Housing Body. I was for ten years Chairperson of the South Dublin\/Wicklow Branch of the Irish Foster Care Association. Clubs and Committees Currently on Dublin City Council I Chair the South East Area Committee and the Housing Strategic Policy Committee. I am Board member of Donnybrook Community Employment and Sandymount Community Services, Donnybrook Community Playschool and numerous other local, community and Dublin wide organisations. I am member of the Board of Scouting Ireland, the City of Dublin Education and Training Board and the Royal Hospital Donnybrook Board.
