Now that the posters are being taken down and the offices cleared I can reflect on what an honour it remains to be elected by your own community to represent them on Dublin City Council<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

I recall the words the late Dan Spring<\/a> said to me many years ago \u201cIt is easy to be elected son \u2013 the real trick is to be re-elected\u201d. To have been so re-elected in 1999, 2004 and 2009 is something that I remain honoured and grateful for. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

I am obviously deeply indebted to a wonderful campaign team, kick started by Keith Martin<\/a>, before he went on to mastermind Nessa Childers<\/a>‘ magnificent win to the European Parliament to be succeeded by Aidan Sweeney as Director of Elections assisted by Gerry Ashe and to that wonderful group of people who came out nearly every night for four or five weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end of it all I am grateful for those more than two thousand people who left their homes or places of work to come down and put a Number 1 or high preference beside my name. More than twenty years after seeking election for the first time that simple act of democratic participation amazes and humbles me more than ever.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

I look forward to working with Mary<\/a> and Ois\u00edn<\/a> over the next five years serving Pembroke-Rathmines from a Social Democratic perspective and working with Eoghan<\/a> and Edie<\/a> and Jim<\/a> in the best interests of the area. Together, with Kevin<\/a> and Maria<\/a> and Catherine<\/a> and Mannix<\/a>, working on the wider Area Committee I hope that we can all work for a better Dublin South East but above all a better Dublin.<\/span><\/p>\n

I was co-opted to Dublin City Council in 1993 to fill the vacancy caused by the appointment of Ruairi Quinn as Minister for Enterprise and Employment. Since then I have been re-elected at each local elections in 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019 in varying parts of Dublin Bay South as the electoral areas changed. On the Council I have served as Chairperson of the Employment Committee, Finance Committee, Arts and Sports Committee, Housing Committee, Protocol Committee and the Council itself as Lord Mayor of Dublin. I have also served as Chairperson of the South East Area Committee. I was elected Leader of the Labour Group in 2011. I have served as Cathaoirleach of the Dublin Regional Authority, the Southern and Eastern Regional Assembly and the Eastern and Midlands Regional Assembly. The only person to chair all three. I pioneered the 20% Social and Affordable Housing concept though the Dublin Docklands Development MasterPlan and have established a housing co-op in my own area and am a Board member of an Approved Housing Body. I was for ten years Chairperson of the South Dublin\\\/Wicklow Branch of the Irish Foster Care Association. Clubs and Committees Currently on Dublin City Council I Chair the South East Area Committee and the Housing Strategic Policy Committee. I am Board member of Donnybrook Community Employment and Sandymount Community Services, Donnybrook Community Playschool and numerous other local, community and Dublin wide organisations. I am member of the Board of Scouting Ireland, the City of Dublin Education and Training Board and the Royal Hospital Donnybrook Board.
