Monday saw the monthly meeting of the South East Area Committee. On the Planning side I had requested that the planning application for Dunluce on Anglesea Road be included on the agenda. This is a substantial development with 28 apartments on the site of a former single home and in my view represented considerable overdevelopment and at six -storeys at one point is too high. Access and egress onto Anglesea Road at a dangerous curve on the road would also be a problem. On my proposal the committee agreed to recommend a Refusal of Permission.

The Committee dealt with the placing on the list of protected buildings a number of buildings in Rathmines and Rathgar including Rathgar House on the grounds of St. Lukes Hospital that I had previously proposed. These were agreed.

Other issues raised included a clean up plan for the River Dodder, various matters raised at the Nutley Residents Association and a variety of traffic matter.

A proposal from my colleague Mary Freehill to begin the process of including the US Embassy in Ballsbridge on the list of protected buildings was universally welcomed and agreed.

Later that evening we had a full City Council which saw the PD’s nominating Tony Williams in place of the departing John Kenny. While welcoming Tony on a personal level I expressed disquiet at the filling of the vacancy in both the dieing days of the Council and the P.D’s. I also raised a number of question on the interference by the Department of Finance in the expenditure of the City Councils own funds. The Council adopted a new Public Art Policy and Strategy which included a prohibition on Public Memorials/Statues until a person was dead for twenty years. I along with Councillor Emer Costello felt the time was too long and it was agreed to reconsider this aspect.

Tuesday night at 5.30pm saw a meeting of the City of Dublin Youth Service Board where again we had to deal with the outcome of Fianna Fails mess of the economy and subsequent cut backs. At 6.30pm there was a meeting of the Lansdowne Road Stadium Project Monitoring Committee. This structure is I believe working quiet well and we were able to raise a number of issues brought to our attention by residents as well as considering applications for grants under the Community Gain Fund. Further details and minutes of the meetings are available at: www.lrsdc.ie

Tuesday evening concluded with a meeting of the Donnybrook Scout Group Council where in some ways this whole political journey started many years ago.

On Wednesday night I organized a meeting for residents in St. Alban’s Park, Sandymount. The meeting took place in the Merrion Inn and was very well attended. As the saying goes there was a full and frank exchange of views and I will be working to try and identify an acceptable solution over the next few weeks.

As tomorrow is Good Friday and the commencement of the holidays can I just say Happy Easter to you all – enjoy the break and looking forward to the next weeks as we head into Local Elections 2009.

While clearly the Budget was the Political event of the week local politics and activities continue.
