{"id":29,"date":"2004-05-09T09:00:49","date_gmt":"2004-05-09T08:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dermotlacey.ie\/blog\/2004\/05\/cullen-reflect-regret-reject\/"},"modified":"2008-07-11T14:19:50","modified_gmt":"2008-07-11T13:19:50","slug":"cullen-reflect-regret-reject","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/dermotlacey.ie\/blog\/2004\/05\/cullen-reflect-regret-reject\/","title":{"rendered":"Cullen &#8211; Reflect, Regret, Reject"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Time for Martin Cullen and the Three R&#8217;s &#8211; Reflect, Regret and Reject<br \/>\nStatement by Councillor Dermot Lacey<br \/>\nLabour &#8211; Pembroke &#8211; Dublin City Council.<br \/>\nSunday 9th May 2004<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As Dublin City Council prepares for its last meeting prior to the June Elections it is time to reflect on the &#8220;what might have been&#8221; had Ireland an able, committed and reforming Minister for Local Government&#8221;, according to former Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Dermot Lacey.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Had the City Council the power and the resources, we might have been able to make real inroads to our Housing situation rather than the growing crisis facing so many families and individuals in our Capital City&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n&#8220;Had the City Council the power and the resources, we might have been able to tackle the creaking transport deficit and confusion in our City&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Had the City Council the power and the resources we might have been able to tackle the major deficits in environmental protection and poor planning&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Instead we had Martin Cullen!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As the City Council faces into its last meeting on Monday 10th May we must in particular regret the anti-democratic and anti-Dublin bias inherent in the withdrawal by Minister Cullen of the right of the people of this City to elect their own Lord Mayor and his failure to in any way reform the structures of Local Government in Dublin&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As the people of Dublin face into the first Elections since the General Election of 2002, it is time for the people of Dublin to reject Martin Cullen and his Party candidates for the deceits of that election, for their failure to stand up and deliver for the people and City of Dublin and perhaps above all for their shameful and underhanded denial of the people&#8217;s right to elect their own Lord<br \/>\nMayor&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Time for Martin Cullen and the Three R&#8217;s &#8211; Reflect, Regret and Reject Statement by Councillor Dermot Lacey Labour &#8211; Pembroke &#8211; Dublin City Council. My background Growing up in Donnybrook, where I still live, I was always in involved in community life particularly through my membership of Donnybrook Scout Group. I was co-opted to Dublin City Council in 1993 to fill the vacancy caused by the appointment of Ruairi Quinn as Minister for Enterprise and Employment. Since then I have been re-elected at each local elections in 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019 in varying parts of Dublin Bay South as the electoral areas changed. On the Council I have served as Chairperson of the Employment Committee, Finance Committee, Arts and Sports Committee, Housing Committee, Protocol Committee and the Council itself as Lord Mayor of Dublin. I have also served as Chairperson of the South East Area Committee. I was elected Leader of the Labour Group in 2011. I have served as Cathaoirleach of the Dublin Regional Authority, the Southern and Eastern Regional Assembly and the Eastern and Midlands Regional Assembly. The only person to chair all three. I pioneered the 20% Social and Affordable Housing concept though the Dublin Docklands Development MasterPlan and have established a housing co-op in my own area and am a Board member of an Approved Housing Body. I was for ten years Chairperson of the South Dublin\/Wicklow Branch of the Irish Foster Care Association. Clubs and Committees Currently on Dublin City Council I Chair the South East Area Committee and the Housing Strategic Policy Committee. I am Board member of Donnybrook Community Employment and Sandymount Community Services, Donnybrook Community Playschool and numerous other local, community and Dublin wide organisations. I am member of the Board of Scouting Ireland, the City of Dublin Education and Training Board and the Royal Hospital Donnybrook Board.
