We had a great Selection Convention in The Mansion House<\/a> for the Pembroke-Rathmines and the South East Inner City wards.\u00a0 The Selection Conventions were chaired by well known blogging politician, Dominic Hannigan<\/a>, and hosted by the Dublin South East Labour Party<\/a>.\u00a0 Kevin Humphreys<\/a> and Maria Parodi were selected for the South East Inner City – which inexplicably now includes half of Sandymount – and Mary Freehill<\/a>, Ois\u00edn Quinn<\/a> and I were selected for the new Pembroke-Rathmines ward.<\/p>\n

There was a good atmosphere and, while in no way complacent, we all felt that three seats out of the six in Pembroke-Rathmines is an achievable goal. The fact that we are all from different parts of the new area and that we are all very different in terms of our interests and backgrounds will, I believe, add to the possibility. \u00a0 I know that we will all work together for what can be a great Labour<\/a> victory.<\/p>\n

In my own speech to the Convention I spoke about our achievements over the years in terms of housing provision, protection of green spaces and creation of new parks & playgrounds and the initiation of various community development grant schemes.\u00a0 However, I also acknowledged that we have a long way to go in terms of developing a truly inclusive society and the need for better housing and planning services in the City.\u00a0 I also emphasised, as I always do, the need for fundamental reform of our Local Government system itself.<\/p>\n

Quite simply, Fianna F\u00e1il<\/a> has let down the people of Dublin.\u00a0 In Dublin South East they have failed abysmally to use the Celtic Tiger years to deliver at all.\u00a0 The advent of a Green Party<\/a> Minister has had no impact except the crazy and self-serving (for the Greens) division of Sandymount in terms of Local Government representation.\u00a0 I intend to use the next nine months to highlight their failures and to offer positive, sensible and practical solutions to our problems.\u00a0 Dublin is great City and deserves better.<\/p>\n

I look forward to the challenge over the next nine months.\u00a0 I look forward to working with a great team of people who have already started to form around my candidacy.\u00a0 I look forward to being out and about and
