Clearly the towering personality, here, as in many ways the Party itself, was <a title=\"Michael McDowell @ Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Mcdowell\" target=\"_blank\">Michael McDowell<\/a>. As a local TD I always found Michael courteous and helpful and, while not sharing his politics, I believe that he played an important role in Irish life.<\/p>\n<p>However it was the PD Councillor <a title=\"Wendy Hederman @ the PDs\" href=\"http:\/\/www.progressivedemocrats.ie\/our_people\/member\/54\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wendy Hederman<\/a> with whom I had most contact. Wendy was elected along with myself and <a title=\"Lucinda Creighton\" href=\"http:\/\/www.lucindacreighton.ie\" target=\"_blank\">Lucinda Creighton<\/a> for Pembroke at the 2004 Local Elections. Daughter of former Lord Mayor<br \/>\n<a title=\"Carmencita Hederman @ Wikipedia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carmencita_Hederman\" target=\"_blank\">Carmencita Hederman<\/a>, Wendy had a hard act to follow. She did this with style and integrity and played a very strong role in the adoption of the City Development Plan when together we pushed through a range of<br \/>\nmeasures to protect the Green Spaces, Institutional lands and residential amenities. The rejection of\u00a0 Ballsbridge for Prime Urban Centre (PUC) development was particularly important and may prove significant in the final <a title=\"ABP\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pleanala.ie\" target=\"_blank\">An Bord Plean\u00e1la<\/a> decision re the Jury&#8217;s\/Berkeley Court site. At the time of her departure from the<br \/>\nCouncil, members from all Parties paid tribute to her ability and contribution.<\/p>\n<p>So while I am not sorry to see the departure of the PDs and their particular form of politics from Irish political life, I want to salute those local activists and Public Representatives who did, from their perspective, make a contribution honestly and sincerely.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the soon to be ending life of the PDs, it is worth looking at their record here in Dublin South East. My background Growing up in Donnybrook, where I still live, I was always in involved in community life particularly through my membership of Donnybrook Scout Group. I was co-opted to Dublin City Council in 1993 to fill the vacancy caused by the appointment of Ruairi Quinn as Minister for Enterprise and Employment. Since then I have been re-elected at each local elections in 1999, 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019 in varying parts of Dublin Bay South as the electoral areas changed. On the Council I have served as Chairperson of the Employment Committee, Finance Committee, Arts and Sports Committee, Housing Committee, Protocol Committee and the Council itself as Lord Mayor of Dublin. I have also served as Chairperson of the South East Area Committee. I was elected Leader of the Labour Group in 2011. I have served as Cathaoirleach of the Dublin Regional Authority, the Southern and Eastern Regional Assembly and the Eastern and Midlands Regional Assembly. The only person to chair all three. I pioneered the 20% Social and Affordable Housing concept though the Dublin Docklands Development MasterPlan and have established a housing co-op in my own area and am a Board member of an Approved Housing Body. I was for ten years Chairperson of the South Dublin\/Wicklow Branch of the Irish Foster Care Association. Clubs and Committees Currently on Dublin City Council I Chair the South East Area Committee and the Housing Strategic Policy Committee. I am Board member of Donnybrook Community Employment and Sandymount Community Services, Donnybrook Community Playschool and numerous other local, community and Dublin wide organisations. I am member of the Board of Scouting Ireland, the City of Dublin Education and Training Board and the Royal Hospital Donnybrook Board.
