THE PRICE paid for land cannot be allowed to become the \u201cyardstick\u201d by which planning decisions are made, Labour city councillor Dermot Lacey has told the Bord Plean\u00e1la hearing on developer Se\u00e1n Dunne\u2019s high-rise plans for Ballsbridge.<\/p>\n

The decision of Dublin city planners to grant permission for the development of the former Jurys-Berkeley Court land, bought by Mr Dunne for \u20ac380 million three years ago, was \u201ca gross act of defiance\u201d against the wishes of the city councillors, Mr Lacey said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe intensity of the proposed development is apparently necessary because of the huge price paid for the land. If the cost of land becomes the yardstick for planning decisions, we might as well throw out all the planning laws and get rid of the development plan.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 37-storey tower was \u201ccompletely out of character\u201d with the area and two 15-storey towers had \u201cno artistic merit whatsoever, they are simply blocks of concrete\u201d, Mr Lacey said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Clubs and Committees Currently on Dublin City Council I Chair the South East Area Committee and the Housing Strategic Policy Committee.
